Despite its small population, St. Maries is renowned for its numerous recreational
activities and 360-degree views. Located in Benewah County, just two hours from
the border of Canada, St. Maries
is on the cusp of two large rivers surrounded by dense forests and a multitude
of lakes. Heyburn
State Park provides some of the area's best campsites as well as the opportunity
to birdwatch, hike, swim, boat and fish. A number of companies have guided trips
that provide the chance to try hunting, fishing, backpacking, trail riding and
boating. The area is locally famous for water sports as the St.
Maries River and the six creeks feeding into it provide ideal conditions for
kayaking and rafting. For a journey through the history of St. Maries and northern
Idaho, visit the Hughes
House Museum, a men's club established in 1902 that now houses photos, antiques
and artifacts.
